The battery pack is among the most expensive components found in battery-operated products such as power tools, scooters, and electric vehicles (EV). In electric vehicles, battery pack performance greatly influences vehicle-level concerns including vehicle range, battery pack service life, and charge time, not to mention vehicle safety and reliability.

Battery management is the subject of intense research and ongoing development effort. A key element of battery management is battery charging, which includes a growing infrastructure of Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE), as well as the On-Board Charger (OBC) that is part of the vehicle electrical system. This session will cover the energy conversion aspects of EV charging with emphasis on power electronics architecture, and how to implement charging and energy storage strategies that increase battery performance and thus help to relieve 'range anxiety'.

John Johnson's career spans over 25 years in the semiconductor industry with roles in engineering, marketing, and management. At STMicroelectronics, he manages the Automotive Systems Marketing group for the Americas region. Prior to this, he was an engineer/manager developing communication system test equipment, primarily targeting mobile infrastructure and video distribution. John has a BSEE from Purdue University and is the author/co-author of several articles and papers addressing subject matter including vehicle electrification and video analytics, and signal chain design and processing.
